Puppy Poetry

Where Is It?by Molly Biehl ) 2001 Critter Haven Jr. Youth Coordinator

In the cold dark prison he cries As his little sister dies.
She is the last of his kin,
One by one they got so thin.
And now he feels so weak today...
The man who feeds them walked away.
"This one can't eat...it's too weak"
And despite that no kind words did he speak.
So slowly he is wasting away,
Sitting in his prison every day.
Where is this horrible, horrible place?
Some faraway country?
What a disgrace!
And who are these people locked away tight?
With no food or water and no strength to fight?
People?
It happens to the least of our kind
They can't talk or fight,
All they have is their mind.
And the places,
Where many are locked away still
It's right in your country - it's a puppymill.

Pet Shop Puppy
I'm a little puppy, so cuddly, sweet and small
I live inside a cage, you see at a Pet Store in the mall.
I'm not an only puppy, my sisters are all here.
My brothers, too, except for Ralph who died coz he was scared.
It's lonely here at nighttime when all the lights go dark,
We tremble in our cages and we whimper and we bark.
But no one comes to hold us or pet our fears away.
We sit all night in terror til the store opens next day.
We don't remember mama, left so far behind.
she did the best she could for us til Man said "It is time."
He crammed us all in cages too small for us you see.
We rode for hours; we could not help but lay in poop and pee.
And now we sit in a Pet Store where kids come taunt and squeeze.
They do not hear our whimpers or understand our pleas.
We're miserable and it's scary here we all would rather die.
But since we don't we do our best to run away and hide.
I know you think my story too sad to leave me be.
You want to take me home with you, a happy little puppy.
But please, though it is fearful to live here against our will.
If you take me that leaves a spot another pup will fill.
You can stop our suffering but not by taking us home.
You must be strong and leave us here, unsold and all alone.
For if you do not take me, then another pup won't come.
And maybe he will not be shipped so far away from home.
Tho some of us may not survive the cycle 'ere it falls.
If we don't sell they will not need more puppies in these halls.
And if they need no puppies then the Man will not bring more.
Eventually it can all stop! You CAN close the door.
So when you see a puppy face so sad and sweet and small.
In a cage at a Pet Store at your neighborhood shopping mall.
The best thing you can do for him is leave him sitting there. That is the best way you can tell all dogs how much you care.

Also, I've decided to start a new website with organized information. It's called Pet Shoppe, and here's the link:

My Puppy Poetry

Beneath the Stars
Copyright by Tempe

.I came from a puppy mill.
.Where the food was few and the water was none.
.One by one it picked us off until came my time.
.I was the only one who reached the store.
.In ragged, weak bunches.

.I growl and bite at those who show the signs.
.The signs of buying us.
.For I'd rather die then give up my place here.
.Saving all those others who are sent on this journey.

.But, alas, I am finally dead.
.Now laying here beneath the stars.
.With others who know where our places truely are.

[[Through the wired cage cieling
With the grass and grit beneath my paws
I see a falling star]]

{{So free, off the leash, and happy
If only I could be that way}}

||But give up my place here?
I'd rather stay||

\\For if I leave there will be a spot
For the next puppy dog from those halls
In this pet shop in the mall//

Dear Mr. Cheaure and Mr. Merriam:
There is a national disgrace in this country which your organization supports and sustains. It is the huge, shameless industry of greed known as the puppy mills.
From reports of first-hand experience, I know that at best the mill breeding dogs are confined in small pens walking on wires and enduring pain and suffering for life. Their nutrition is so poor that their teeth fall out, their gums rot with infection, and often their salivary glands swell into painful lumps. They suffer from all types of afflictions - bulging hernias, tumors, infected anal glands, urinary tract infections, ovarian cysts, brittle reproductive organs, uterine infections, ear mites, itching, painful skin disorders. The bare bones cost-cutting greed of the millers restricts expenses for nutrition and health care. How much money the dogs can produce in their brief lives is the only concern of the millers.
The females fare the worst, of course, since they are bred every season and bear litter after litter of puppies often in excruciating pain due to their general poor health and lack of exercise. Many die giving birth or suffer multiple cesareans. When their bodies have given out and they can no longer produce, it is time to kill them.
Litters of sickly, suffering, often genetically defective puppies are sold in bulk to brokers who transport them without mercy to distant stores where they can be sold for maximum profit. A large percentage of the puppies die in transit to the stores, or soon after their arrival in homes.
These are AKC Registered puppies. It is the name that tells the public they are purebred dogs and establishes their price tags. This registration is the role you play in this tragic, shameful business, and it is a critical role for all the other players - the greedy millers, the ruthless brokers, and the unscrupulous pet store owners.
You have the power to stop this monstrous cruelty, and it is inconceivable that you do not have the integrity to do so. The registration of litters from mass producing, substandard breeders is grossly inconsistent with any mission statement of furthering the interest of purebred dogs. It defiles your name and trashes your paperwork.
I insist that you establish and enforce requirements and limitations for dog-breeding establishments, that you restrict the use of your name to ethical, humane breeders, that you restore moral health to your organization.
For all the dogs now suffering in their cages, begging , hoping, crying in pain and desperation, I write this. I want you to think of them also, day and night.
Signed
